DetailIf you own a .TR domain name and are considering selling it, there are important rules and processes you need to be aware of. As these Turkey-specific domain names are managed by TRABİS (Turkish Domain Name System) under the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK), they may differ from general international domain rules. At Egeset, we're here to help you understand this process and guide you to take the correct steps.
With the launch of TRABİS, significant updates have been made regarding the sale and transfer of .TR domain names. In the old Nic.tr era, such transactions were generally prohibited or very restricted. However, in the new period, this has become possible for some extensions.
Important Information:
Registrant Transfer (Change of Ownership): A sale fundamentally means the transfer of domain name ownership to a new individual or entity. While this is often easily done with an EPP code for international domains, it's different for .TR extensions.
Document-Required Extensions: For some .TR extensions that required documents for allocation (e.g., .gov.tr, .edu.tr, .k12.tr, .av.tr), ownership changes can generally only be made under specific conditions with official documents, such as corporate mergers, acquisitions, or changes in legal entity. Individual sales are almost impossible for these types of extensions.
Undocumented Extensions (.com.tr, .net.tr, .org.tr): With TRABİS, more popular extensions like .com.tr, .net.tr, and .org.tr, which previously required documents, can now be registered without documents based on the "first come, first served" principle. For these extensions, sales and transfer transactions became possible three years after TRABİS became operational (i.e., as of September 12, 2025). After this date, ownership changes and thus sales transactions for these extensions will be subject to more flexible conditions.
Other Undocumented Extensions: For other undocumented extensions such as .web.tr, .gen.tr, .name.tr, .tel.tr, sales and transfer processes can also be carried out according to TRABİS rules.
If you want to transfer your .TR domain name, here are the general steps you should follow and what you need to consider:
Check Current Rules: Check the latest announcements from BTK and TRABİS, as well as the information on your domain registrar's (like Egeset) website, to learn the current rules applicable to the extension you wish to transfer. Rules can be updated periodically.
Contact Your Registrar: Get in touch with the company where your domain name is registered (Egeset). Submit your transfer (change of ownership) request. Registrars will guide you through this process in accordance with TRABİS rules.
Obtain Required Documents: Depending on the type of extension and the reason for transfer (individual sale, corporate merger, etc.), different documents may be requested. These documents typically include:
Transfer forms (signed by both the old and new owner)
Copies of ID cards (for individual transfers)
Tax plate, trade registry gazette, signature circular (for corporate transfers)
Trademark registration certificate or patent certificate (if the domain name is based on a trademark/patent right and this right is also being transferred)
Heirloom documents in cases of death, absence, etc.
Initiate the Transfer Request: Once you have completed the necessary documents, initiate the transfer request to TRABİS through your registrar.
TRABİS Approval: TRABİS will review the submitted documents and the transfer request to check their compliance. If found appropriate, the transfer will be approved.
Completion of Transfer: After approval, the domain name's ownership information will be updated. This process usually takes a few business days.
At Egeset, we offer comprehensive support for all processes related to your .TR domain names, from registration and renewal to transfer and ownership changes. Especially concerning the complex rules and bureaucratic procedures unique to .TR domain names, our expert team is always ready to provide you with accurate information and facilitate your transactions.
Please Note: In .TR domain names, the concept of "sale" generally means the official transfer of domain ownership. Unlike international domain names, the free market dynamics for buying and selling might work differently for .TR extensions. Therefore, before selling or purchasing a .TR domain name, it's crucial to carefully review the current rules and your registrar's procedures.
