How to Update Your Domain Name's WHOIS Information?

Importance of Keeping it Current

The WHOIS database stores publicly available contact information provided at the time of your domain name's registration (name, address, email, phone, etc.). Keeping this information current and accurate is crucial for the validity and security of your digital presence. It's vital for complying with regulations from organizations like ICANN and ensuring you can be contacted in case of any issues.

Why Must WHOIS Information Be Up-to-Date?

  • Legal Compliance: According to ICANN rules, domain name owners are required to keep their WHOIS information accurate and current. Incorrect or outdated information can lead to your domain name being suspended or even canceled.

  • Security and Communication: Important notifications regarding your domain (renewal reminders, security alerts, technical issues, etc.) are sent to these contact details. Keeping your information current ensures you receive these notifications promptly and enhances your domain name's security.

  • Brand Reputation: Accurate and transparent information boosts your brand's credibility and professionalism.

Steps to Update WHOIS Information

The process for updating your WHOIS information is similar across domain registrars. You can easily perform this operation through your Egeset client panel:

  1. Log In to Your Egeset Client Panel: Access your Egeset client management panel using your username and password.

  2. Navigate to the My Domains Section: In the panel, you'll typically find a section listing your registered domain names, often labeled "My Domains," "Domain Management," or similar. Click on this section.

  3. Select the Relevant Domain Name: Find the domain name for which you want to update the WHOIS information in the list and click on it or on the "Manage" button next to it.

  4. Locate the Contact Information / WHOIS Settings Section: On the domain-specific management page, you'll typically find a section under a heading like "Contact Information," "Owner Details," "WHOIS Settings," or "User Information." Click on this section.

  5. Update Your Information: In this section, you'll find contact information for the domain's registrant (owner), administrative contact, billing contact, and technical contact. Edit the relevant fields (name, surname, title, company name, address, email, phone number, etc.) as needed.

  6. Save the Changes: After updating the information, click a button like "Save," "Apply," or "Update" to confirm the changes.

Important Notes and Next Steps:

  • Email Verification (Especially for Registrant and Email Changes): When you change critical information such as the domain owner's name/surname/organization name or the domain's registered email address, an ICANN-mandated verification process is triggered. In this case:

    • A verification email will be sent to both the old WHOIS email address and the newly entered email address.

    • You must click the verification links in both emails to approve the change.

    • Unconfirmed changes can often lead to the domain being suspended within 15 days. Therefore, check your emails carefully.

  • 60-Day Transfer Lock: When you make a change to critical WHOIS information like the domain owner's name, surname, organization name, or email address, ICANN may impose a 60-day transfer lock on the domain. This means your domain name cannot be transferred to another registrar for 60 days. This lock is designed to prevent unauthorized transfers. Some registrars might offer you an "opt-out" option before enabling this lock.

  • WHOIS Privacy (ID Protection): If you prefer your personal information not to be publicly accessible in the WHOIS database, many domain registrars like Egeset offer a WHOIS Privacy Protection service. When you purchase this service, general contact information belonging to the registrar is displayed instead of your personal details, thus protecting your privacy. You might consider activating this service after updating your WHOIS information.
